In this book the author has tried to tell the War Relocation Authority story as he remembers it, drawing on official documents and other sources where necessary to supplement his recollections. It is his hope that the recounting will help clear up misconceptions that have prevailed all too long, that the experience will provide some helpful guides toward reaching and maintaining sound democratic objectives, and that the story itself will prove to be as interesting to the reader as it was to one who lived it. The author served as Director of the WRA through more than ninety percent of its active life as a wartime agency of the United States government. [From the Preface]
